People often get bewildered regarding selecting the right air compressor to operate their equipment. Quite simply, there are various aspects you will want to look at when selecting an air compressor for your garage or shop.

Let’s look at these elements:

1. Horse power rating

Most people are of the view that the greater the horse power, the more effective is the air compressor. But, all horse power ratings are not equal and may even be misrepresented. For instance, when you go to a hardware store to get a 6 hp air compressor, you discover one that is priced really cheap. So, why is 6 horse power commercial unit so expensive? Well, 6 horse power is 6 hp, right? Not necessarily, because when choosing an air compressor, you need to see the power that the air compressor draws. If if needs 15 amps from a 110 volts circuit, then you are actually getting about 2 horse power. So, the 6 hp rating on the compressor is inflated.

In order to generate 6 hp, you’d require a minimum of 24 amps from a 220 volts circuit. For that reason, if you are interested in a 6 horse power electric compressor, you should purchase a commercial compressor, instead of getting a cheaper unit from a hardware store.

2. How much PSI will you need?

For all newbies, PSI means “pounds per square inch” and a lot of the compressors in the United States are rated this way. In the European Union, they’re measured in bar. When picking an air compressor, you may want to settle for 90 PSI for correct operation. However, still you would need an air compressor that has higher shut-off pressure. Air compressors in hardware stores are “single-stage” and have a shut off at around 126-135 PSI. Almost all light duty air compressors shut off at around 100 PSI and so are fine for light duty garage use. However, if you’re going to use power tools, then more is definitely better. Most of the industrial air compressors are “two-stage”, which is they build up the shut-off pressure in two separate stages. The first stage builds up at around 90 PSI and the second state builds it to 175 PSI.

3. CFM

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute), is a measurement of volume, which is the amount of air which is being moved. Air tools need specific volume of air to run efficiently. Though every manufacturer attempts to impress that his product gives higher CRM ratings at different pressures, your true concern when selecting an air compressor needs to be on how much you would get at 90 PSI because this is what many of the air tools require for efficient operation.

4. Tank size

The tank size of air compressor is expressed in US gallons. Many people get confused about the best tank size when selecting an air compressor. Firstly, you should not confuse a large tank with more run time for your air tools. If tools are used occasionally, then a large tank is good. However, should you want to use your tools constantly, you would do better with a small tank and large enough motor and pump. This would make sure that you won’t run out of air.

Now you can effectively choose an air compressor armed with this useful information. Lastly, you need to decide on what you’re going to use your air compressor for and select the right model.

The small to medium range hatchback market is an ultra competitive one. The Seat range, the VW Golf, Audi, BMW, Mini and a host of other brands all compete for the lion’s share of this lucrative market, but the car that currently stands out is the Vauxhall Astra. In terms of price, equipment, driveability and quality, the Astra could well be the pound for pound best buy.

Vauxhall’s new designs have been nothing short of a revelation to a company that looked like it could be on the verge of ailing. Other manufacturers like Ford and Citroen had been first to bring out their groundbreaking new designs while Vauxhall waited in the wings. With the release of cars like the new Insignia, the re-modelled Corsa and most importantly the revamped Astra, Vauxhall has sustained its big league status.

The Vauxhall Astra seems perfect for the modern driver. It’s large enough to fit a family without being a cumbersome gas guzzler, it has a good range of diesel engines and it’s packed with cutting edge technology. Insurance costs are cheap and road tax is low.

The ecoFLEX diesel engines which Vauxhall are producing are a rival to any on the market. The 1.3CDTi can muster an impressive 58mpg on the combined cycle, and at no pint is it noisy or unrefined.

The Vauxhall Astra price range begins with the 1.4 litre petrol edition, coming in at £12,995, if that is out of your price range try looking at a used vauxhall astra. Not many manufacturers can offer that amount of metal with a mid size engine at that price. Vauxhall seem to offer huge product ranges where you can choose from all sorts of special editions and many different engines.

The Vauxhall Astra has been the driving force behind Vauxhall’s success for a generation. This looks set to continue with the new generation of Astra taking plaudits from critics and consumers alike.

The demand for practical family cars is as big as ever and there are a number of very capable MPV’s on the road, none more than the Vauxhall Zafira. The Zafira falls firmly under the category of Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) due to its focus on functionality and space.
The Vauxhall Zafira is equipped with the Flex7 seating plan, which gives the floor-plan an endless versatility. Seats slide and fold into various configurations until you have the set up which best suits your family’s needs. The Flex7 name is a reference to the 5 seats and 2 occasional seats although to call the back seats occasional seat may be a disservice. The seven seats move and slide with equal priority. It’s a great car for anyone with a large family, Zafira’s can be found at fantastic cheap prices on second hand car advertising sites such as motors.co.uk.
For those who want to carry a large human cargo, you may wish to have the seats aligned in a 2-3-2 formation with two seats up front, three seats in the middle, and an extra two in the back. This can be particularly handy when transporting kids and their friends.
It would be wrong to think that anyone who owns a Zafira needs to have five kids though. Perhaps its most practical setup is in a 2-3 formation with plenty of room in the boot for shopping and the general wares associated with family life.
Vauxhall claim that you can alter the seating set up from two to seven in a mere 15 seconds, making the Vauxhall Zafira ideal for human transportation or the carrying of bulky cargo.
The Zafira’s prices start very reasonably at around £14,000 for the 1.6i 16v VVT petrol version, but the best options might be the 1.7 CDTi ecoFLEX diesel models.
The Vauxhall Zafira is surprisingly cheap to run at insurance group 6 and with minimal servicing costs, making it a practical car in every sense. For anyone interested in buying an MPV, the Zafira is a real challenger to the Ford C-Max.

There are many issues to deal with in the wake of a car crash, not least any physical injuries or emotional trauma you may be experiencing as a result of the crash. This can make it difficult to really consider matters, such as who was responsible for the accident and whether you have a case for making a compensation claim. However, if you are involved in a car crash that you did not cause, you may well be entitled to financial compensation for any injuries or trauma you have suffered as a result.

Although it is possible to simply make the claim on your own behalf, given the number of things you will have to deal with it is better to seek specialist legal advice. A solicitor experienced in this area will understand the rules that need to be followed in order to resolve the claim a quickly as possible. Ideally you will secure some evidence from the scene of the accident, such as photographs and written notes that you can give to your solicitor. The next stage will be for them to officially contact the person you are claiming damages against, outlining your injuries, informing them that they are being held responsible for them and why. At this point, your opponent has a period of 21 days to acknowledge the letter. If the other person has the appropriate insurance, their insurance company will take over proceedings on their behalf, with a requirement that they notify your solicitor whether they wish to settle your claim. This is what usually happens in less serious instances.

Your solicitor will generally have one of the insurance company’s in-house medics examine you and provide a report of your injuries, which will be used to determine the value of your compensation case and can be utilized when negotiating the value of any settlement.

If you are in need of some legal advice over a road traffic accident, then visit the Road traffic accident site to discuss things with a professional.

Old habits die hard, and one of the oldest — still rigorously enforced by many drivers — is that “warming up” the car for a few minutes is necessary to avoid some kind of unspecified damage.

But idling is totally unnecessary, which is why many communities have enacted ordinances against the practice.

Don’t take my word about idling being ineffective, but do listen to my mechanic, Rob Maier, who runs Maier’s Garage in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

He says, “You don’t really need to idle your car, because of the efficiency of modern fuel injection, which eliminated carburetors and chokes. The only reason to let the car idle at all is to get the oil circulating, but after 30 seconds that’s a done deal. My truck has 150,000 miles on it, and I just throw it into gear and go.”

Here are some quick facts and tips that should put the idling question to rest:

1. Driving warms the car faster than idling
If your concern is not the health of the car, but simply your own creature comforts, Bob Aldrich of the California Energy Commission points out that “idling is not actually an effective way to warm up a car — it warms up faster if you just drive it.”

The coming electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf, will incorporate a wonderful feature that allows the owner to use a cellphone to tell the car (which is plugged into the grid) to pre-warm or pre-cool the interior. No idling necessary.

2. Ten seconds is all you need
Environmental Defense Fund, which produced the Idling Gets You Nowhere campaign, advises motorists to turn off their ignition if they’re sitting stopped for more than 10 seconds.

“After about 10 seconds, you waste more money running the engine than restarting it, said Andy Darrell, deputy director of the EDF Energy Program. “Switch the car off at the curb, and you’ll be leaving money in your wallet and protecting the air in your community.”

3. Idling hurts the car
According to the Hinkle Charitable Foundation’s Anti-Idling Primer, idling forces an engine “to operate in a very inefficient and gasoline-rich mode that, over time, can degrade the engine’s performance and reduce mileage.”

The Campaign for an Idle-Free New York City points out that idling causes carbon residues to build up inside the engine, which reduces its efficiency.
[ Related: Five secrets to make your car last longer and save you money. ]

4. Idling costs money
Over a year of five minutes of daily idling (which causes incomplete combustion of fuel), the “Anti-Idling Primer” estimates that the operator of a V8-engine car will waste 20 gallons of gasoline, which not only produces 440 pounds of carbon dioxide but costs at least $60.

5. Idling in the garage can kill you
Idling a car in a garage, even with the door open, is dangerous and exposes the driver to carbon monoxide and other noxious gases. If the garage is attached, those fumes can also enter the house.
[ Related: Six surprising sources of indoor air pollution. ]

6. Block heaters beat remote starters
Lori Strothard of the Waterloo Citizens Vehicle Idling Reduction Task Force in Canada says, “Remote starters can too easily cause people to warm up their cars for 5 to 15 minutes, which is generally unnecessary.”
A block heater, which is designed to heat the engine and can cost under $30, on a timer set to start one to two hours before driving, does the trick in very cold climates.

7. Quick errands aren’t quick enough
Natural Resources Canada points out that leaving your car idling while you’re running into a store on an errand or going back into the house to pick up a forgotten item is another way to waste gas and pollute both your town and the planet.

“Leaving your engine running is hard on your pocketbook, produces greenhouse gas emissions, and is an invitation to car thieves,” the agency (PDF) says.

8. Idling is bad for your health (and your neighbor’s health)
According to Minneapolis’ anti-idling ordinance, “Exhaust is hazardous to human health, especially children’s; studies have linked air pollution to increased rates of cancer, heart and lung disease, asthma and allergies.”

Isabelle Silverman, who runs EDF’s anti-idling campaign, says that car idling “is the second-hand smoking of the outdoors. One of the problems is that cars idle close to the curb, where pedestrians are walking. And when you have a child in a stroller, they are particularly close to the tailpipe. Studies show that children’s IQ levels are lower when they live near major roads with lots of traffic.” (A fresh study even links autism to freeway pollution.)

Alex Scaperotta, who created an anti-idling campaign with a classmate when he was in fifth grade in Wilton, Connecticut, came up with a slogan that was used on bumper stickers and websites: “If you’re stopped for more than 10, turn it off and on again.” Sounds like good advice.

DETROIT (Bloomberg) — Chrysler Group LLC is recalling about 367,350 Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, citing airbags that may inadvertently deploy.

Chrysler said it is recalling some of the 2008 model year minivans because water leaks may cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and the airbags to inflate. The recall was posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Web site today.

The leaks are caused by improperly assembled heating and cooling system drain grommets, Chrysler said. Those parts were made by BRC Rubber & Plastics Inc., according to the automaker. Representatives of BRC, based in Churubusco, Ind., didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

“Some vehicles may have an improperly installed HVAC hose grommet that could cause moisture to collect on the floor and damage the air bag deployment module,” Vince Muniga, a spokesman for Chrysler, which is operated by Fiat S.p.A., said in an e-mail. “The company is not aware of any accidents or fatalities resulting from this issue.”

WASHINGTON — Toyota Motor Corp. agreed today to pay two more safety fines for a total of $32.4 million, the maximum allowable under U.S. law, to settle federal investigations of whether the company notified regulators of safety defects in timely fashion.

The fines, in addition to an earlier $16.4 million levy paid to settle a similar probe, brings to $48.8 million the amount that Toyota has agreed to pay in civil penalties this year.

Each of the three fines was the maximum permitted under federal law at the time the alleged violations occurred. Together they dwarf safety penalties paid by any other automaker over the years.

One investigation settled today involved 2004-2005 recalls of light trucks for alleged loss of steering control. The other involved a 2007 floor-mat recall to address unintended acceleration caused by pedal entrapment.

Under the settlements, Toyota did not admit to any violation of its federal safety obligations.

“Toyota is pleased to have resolved these legacy issues related to the timeliness of prior recalls dating back to 2005,” Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s Chief Quality Officer for North America, said in a statement. “As we have demonstrated in recent months, our North American operations now have a greater voice in making safety decisions, and we are taking appropriate action whenever any issues emerge.”

Other investigations

Toyota is still subject to additional fines and investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The company could face another possible fine in a probe of whether it viewed unintended acceleration defects too narrowly in four recalls between 2007 and January 2010, said a NHTSA official who declined to be identified.

That investigation, begun in February, is looking in part at how Toyota considered electronic interference as a possible cause of sudden acceleration, the NHTSA Web site says.

The probe is also addressing whether Toyota should have recalled additional models with electronic throttle control, according to the Web site.

Toyota has said that all cases of unintended acceleration stem from either floor mat entrapment or sticky gas pedals. Its tests have ruled out electronic interference as a possible cause, the company said.

Since November 2009, Toyota has recalled 15.5 million vehicles worldwide, most for unintended acceleration.

“I am pleased that Toyota agreed to pay the maximum possible penalty and I expect Toyota to work cooperatively in the future to ensure consumer safety,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

The biggest previous fine, before Toyota’s three penalties for more than $16 million apiece, was a $1 million fine paid by General Motors for windshield-wiper failure in vehicles made in 2002-2003.

As the weather turns colder, I always get a flurry of questions from customers who say their TPMS (Tire Pressure Management System) sensors have been activated telling them that one or more of their tires has experienced a drop in air pressure. Basically they go out to their car on one of the first colder mornings of the season and the warnings start. Understandably, these drivers are worried that one of their tires might have a leak, so they call or come to the shop to investigate. Don’t panic, I tell them. When the temperature drops significantly, your tire pressure can actually go down without losing any air at all. I’ll skip the physics lesson, but the warmer a tire is, the more pressure it will exhibit with the “same” volume of air inside. A sensitive TPMS sensor will see a drop in pressure with a drop in temperature. So before you freak out, fill your tires to the correct pressure, and give it a day. Chances are you are in the clear.

DETROIT — General Motors Co. CEO Dan Akerson says the carmaker is studying how it could double or triple production of the new Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid should sales demand accelerate.

About 240,000 potential buyers have expressed an interest in the vehicle, but production in 2011 will be just 10,000 units. GM plans to build 45,000 Volts in calendar year 2012.

Speaking on the sidelines of the official Volt launch ceremony today at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, GM North America President Mark Reuss said that Volt production is constrained largely by vendor production of battery cells needed for the battery packs that GM assembles in suburban Detroit for the Volt.

He said GM could begin exporting Volts to Europe and elsewhere by late 2011. The European version would be the Opel Ampera.

GM global product chief Tom Stephens said GM also is considering a flex-fuel version of the Volt. He said that GM could have the version available in the 2012 model year if the carmaker pursues the program.

Using E85 fuel, the Volt would use extremely little gasoline, Stephens said. For one thing, most commuters can run on pure electric power to get to and from work. When the internal combustion engine is needed for longer trips, though, with E85, only 15 percent of the fuel is petroleum. The other 85 percent is ethanol, he said.

Beginning in December, GM plans to roll out the Volt in seven states over 12 months with limited supplies available for sale and demonstration at Chevrolet dealers. After that time, the Volt would be available nationally.

Akerson conceded today that GM stands to make little or no initial profit on the Volt. He said the carmaker can sell them “for close to cost.”

The Volt has a base price of $41,000, including shipping, before a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Frank Moultrie, shop chairman of UAW Local 22 representing 960 hourly workers at Detroit-Hamtramck, said there are no immediate plans to add a second shift at the plant. The plant builds the Volt and the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne sedans. The DTS and Lucerne end in 2010.

On electricity alone, the Volt achieves the equivalent of 93 mpg. When powered solely by a 1.4-liter gasoline engine, the Volt gets 37 mpg.
