Ford fears governments may scrap electric car incentives

Published by admin under Articles,FORD,Hybrid

Ford Motor Co. fears cash-strapped European governments may go back on promises to offer consumers incentives to buy electric cars, making EVs unaffordable to most buyers.

Governments in countries such as the UK and France have said they will offer subsidies of up to 5,000 euros to kick start sales of environmentally friendly electric vehicles.

Ford Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth said austerity measures now being introduced by governments to reduce budget deficits may affect subsidies.

“We believe government assistance will be a challenge in the next few years,” Booth said at the Paris auto show, adding that electric cars sales will not take off without incentives.

Ford CFO Booth says the EV market will only develop with government help.

Electric vehicles are much more expensive to build than gasoline or diesel cars because of the high cost of battery packs.

Ford plans to launch a battery powered version of the Transit Connect van next year, followed by a Focus electric car in 2012. The company has not disclosed prices.

Earlier this month, Renault said its Kangoo Express Z.E. electric van will sell for 15,000 euros in France including a 5,000-euro government subsidy. In European markets with no subsidies, the cost will be about 20,000 euros

Re-engineered 2011 Charger is unwrapped, shaken down by Michigan State Police

Published by admin under Dodge

No need to wait for a press conference or auto show to see the next-generation Dodge Charger.

The police car version, called Charger Pursuit, was in plain sight sans camouflage earlier this month during several days of testing by the Michigan State Police. Several photos of the 2011 Charger, some with police car trim, are posted on the jalopnik.com Web site.

The Charger has been re-engineered and restyled for the 2011 model year. Up to now, only heavily disguised spy photos of the car have been available.

All of the sheet metal is new. What can be seen is that the Charger picks up a few styling cues from the late 1960s Chargers, specifically the rear roof line as it flows to the trunk lid, the rear taillight treatment and the side sculpturing on the front doors.

The Charger and two new police car entries were evaluated by the Michigan State Police. The others were the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice and the 2012 Ford Interceptor, essentially a heavy-duty, front-drive Taurus. Ford will phase out the rear-drive Crown Victoria-based police car next year. The police version of the Chevrolet Impala also will be discontinued.

The Caprice is a rear-wheel drive sedan that will be assembled by General Motors Co.’s Holden subsidiary in Australia.

The testing was conducted at Chrysler’s proving grounds in Chelsea, Mich.

The results of the evaluations are expected to be released in December.

The 2011 Charger goes on sale next year.

Chrysler dealers see Jeep pickup, new Viper

Published by admin under Articles,Bulletins,Jeep

DETROIT — Chrysler Group took its dealers by surprise this week by showing them concept versions of the Jeep pickup truck and 2012 Dodge Viper.

The unveilings came Tuesday at the company’s national dealer announcement show in Orlando — the first such show the company has held since 2007.

The dealers also got news about plans for a nine-speed automatic transmission for front-drive vehicles, which would follow an eight-speed automatic transmission for rear-drive vehicles due out in 2012.

Both will be adaptable to all-wheel-drive and hybrid applications, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told dealers in an hour-long address Tuesday. He did not say when the nine-speed automatic would arrive.

There was no word out of the meeting on a plan for the Jeep pickup. Jeep’s last pickup was the Comanche, built for the 1992 model year. Jeep last toyed with the idea of a pickup in 2005, when it unveiled an extended-cab Jeep Gladiator concept at the Detroit auto show and said it was going to study its market potential.

According to one person who attended the dealer meeting, the 2012 Viper concept resembled the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione with a Viper face. The Competizione is a limited-edition supercar that was sold in select Maserati dealerships in North America.

‘Something magic’

At $299,000, the Spider version was the most expensive Alfa Romeo ever.

In 2009 Alfa Romeo brought 84 coupes and 35 Spiders to the United States for sale in seven Maserati dealerships. The cars were sold before they were delivered. At $299,000, the Spider version was the most expensive Alfa Romeo ever.

The fourth-generation Viper ended production at the Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit on July 1. The Viper was first launched in 1992.

Chrysler introduced the 2012 Viper and the pickup truck concept with a touch of drama. At the end of his hour-long speech to dealers, Marchionne closed with a story.

“There are times when you are given the opportunity to give life to something which is so beautiful and unique, so just and equitable, that you pay a lot less attention to the numbers, to the financial reality that surrounds it. They happen only rarely. In my case, three times in more than 15 years as chief executive.”

He recounted a series of conversations he had had with Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO and chief of design for all Chrysler brands.

“We had been debating this particular nameplate for a long time, and every time I just could not get there. And then one morning the product committee went into the dome and saw it, and we all knew we were in front of something magic, unique. It took less than five minutes for the committee to fund the initiative. Not a negative comment, not a remark, not a single question. And so I leave you with this. The 17th car in the lineup, in select dealers in 2012.”

And the Viper emerged from the wings.

The surprise from Jeep

The Jeep pickup got a similarly dramatic introduction. Jeep CEO Michael Manley concluded his presentation to dealers by saying: “You never know what might show up in your showroom someday,” according to a person who attended the meeting. Manley then walked off the stage, and the pickup truck appeared.

Manley said nothing about whether Jeep will produce the pickup.

Marchionne, wearing his trademark black sweater, spoke to an audience that included about 75 percent of Chrysler’s 2,314 dealers, representing about 90 percent of the sales volume.

The dealers also got to see Chrysler’s 2011 lineup, including key new production vehicles such as the Chrysler 200 mid-sized sedan, which is an extensively re-engineered and restyled update of the Sebring sedan.

Other production vehicles include the redesigned Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger full-sized sedans, the revamped versions of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan minivans, the Jeep Patriot and the Dodge Avenger.

How do I know how much air to put in my tires?

Published by admin under Articles,Auto Repair

I looked at my tires this morning and the front tires look lower than the rear. The side of the tire says 44 psi. I checked them with a gauge and it reads 33 psi. Are my tires leaking? Should I set them to 44 psi?

Response:
The 44 psi On the side of the tire is the MAXIMUM pressure that the tire capable of holding according to the tire manufacturer. To find the vehicles correct tire pressure, there is a decal inside the door jam or glove box. In most cases the pressure is between 30 psi and 35 psi. Do not put more than suggested or the tires will wear premature.

Almost all vehicles will have the appearance of low front tires compared to the rear as they carry the weight of the engine and transmission over them. This is normal.

Tim Allen to be new voice of Chevy starting with Cruze ads

Published by admin under Chevy

Chevrolet has tapped actor and comedian Tim Allen to be its voice, beginning with TV advertising for the new Cruze compact.

The first ads for the Cruze will air Tuesday, Sept. 7, Chevrolet said today. The following day, General Motors Co. plans to begin shipping the Cruze for delivery to U.S. and Canadian markets. The Cruze is being assembled in Lordstown, Ohio.

“Tim Allen brings the right combination of a recognizable voice with the credibility, likeability and humor that will connect with viewers,” Joel Ewanick, head of U.S. marketing for GM, said in a statement. “His passion for all things cars makes him the perfect match for the Chevrolet brand.”

Allen starred in TV’s “Home Improvement.” He also starred in The Santa Clause films and as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies.

He grew up in the Detroit area and has been an automobile enthusiast for years.

Chevrolet said Allen’s car collection includes a 1996 Chevrolet LT5 Impala SS and a 2000 Cadillac DeVille DTSi.

Advertising for the Cruze will feature testimonials from the news media and comparisons with rival compact cars. As part of the introduction, Chevrolet is encouraging dealers to purchase competitive models such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic and allow shoppers to compare the Cruze directly.

The initial Cruze ads will be followed by more TV commercials with a large social media component and product placement in relevant shows, Chevrolet said.

“Tim Allen will be the voice in our Cruze advertising, but the car will be the star,” Ewanick said. “Our communication on the Cruze will highlight the car, its features and its competitive advantages.”
