QUESTION:

While driving to work, 2002 Taurus started revving so high i almost couldn’t stop at stoplights. Put it in park and the rpm’s went over 3000. I work with mechanics who found a dry rotted PVC vacuum hose going into the upper intake. But replacing it did nothing. It revved up almost to 3500. They put it on the computer and no fault codes given. They’ve tried as much as they could tonight until it got late. Their thoughts now are possibly the intake gasket. I”m a single mom and this is my only car (which of course was just paid off in Feb). These guys are super mechanics and they’ve never seen an engine rev that high.

ANSWER:

You have one of two things going on. The idle air control valve is stuck open (very common) or the throttle position sensor is sticking and sending a part throttle signal to the computer. Neither item will set a DTC. (Diagnostic Trouble Code)
